The VELVET UNDERGROUND has always been one of my favourite bands, whose influence on the punk scene which followed is undisputed. I never got to see them together, but separately they trickled into my sphere- beginning with LOU REED, which was one of my first concert shoots on Oct.25, '76 at the Massey Hall in Toronto.

One of my Lou Reed photos appears on the February, 2008 cover of SXSWorld magazine!

MORE LOU REED photos from the Edge gig are on my Indyfoto site.

Later in 1979 The Edge in Toronto brought both JOHN CALE, in March, and NICO, who performed solo.

JOHN CALE’s band consisted of an amazing group of people who I remember as being exceptionally accommodating and friendly. It was unusual to include women in bands, which I appreciated- though the tambourines undercut the impact somewhat. But John Cale's construction hat... why? I never got it. All my stage photos of Cale look like he's digging on a building site rather than playing a gig.

I'm hoping to identify the members of Cale's band. The list I have from a '79 recording is:

Vocals, piano, guitar, fretless bass & viola: John Cale
Lead Guitar: Marc Aaron
Keyboards & vocals: Joe Bidewell
Percussion & vocals: Deerfrance
Bass & vocals: George Scott
Drums & vocals: Doug Bowne

Email or write below in comments if you can help! Thanks!

Photos: THE ONLY ONES Feb. (6 or 7) 1979, also BATTERED WIVES?

THE ONLY ONES (UK) are best known for their song, "Another Girl, Another Planet". They formed in 1976 and broke up soon after in 1981. The band was led by singer/ songwriter Peter Perrett, with guitarist John Perry, drummer Mike Kellie (formerly of Spooky Tooth) and bassist Alan Mair.

A fan borrows THE ONLY ONES Alan Mair's top hat. Reflected in her glasses- drummer Mike Kellie, I believe. If you recognize this girl (possibly a journalist), please ask her to contact me.

They were upstairs (backstage) at the Edge following The Only Ones concert in Feb. (6 or 7th), 1979. I'm guessing they're a band, possibly the opening act. One is wearing a BATTERED WIVES T-shirt. The band received so much negative publicity, they were eventually forced to change their name to The WIVES.
